  17. <p>    One reason Sousuke Uno got the Prime Minister's job in the
  18. wake of the Recruit influence-peddling scandal was that he was
  19. widely regarded as Mr. Clean. Last week that reputation was
  20. impugned from an unexpected quarter: a former geisha who claimed
  21. to have been his lover. SCOOP: A SCANDAL INVOLVING PRIME
  22. MINISTER UNO, shrieked a headline in the weekly magazine Sunday
  23. Mainichi. In an interview, the 40-year-old, otherwise
  24. unidentified former geisha said Uno paid her about $21,000
  25. during a five-month affair that began in October 1985. She
  26. portrayed Uno as bullying and self-aggrandizing.

  28. <p>    Traditionally, a public servant's private life is ignored
  29. in Japan, but the Sunday Mainichi's editor in chief, Shuntaro
  30. Torigoe, argued that "the time has come to question Japanese
  31. politicians' illicit relations with women." Questioned by
  32. legislators, Uno said, "I'd rather refrain from commenting on
  33. such matters in public."
